Tom Neely releases New Graphic Novel

The Wolf is a new graphic novel by Los Angeles-based painter-cartoonist Tom Neely. The book tells a simple love story, but one woven with surrealist horror, werewolf lore and its own brand of nightmare logic. With The Wolf, Neely progresses from the traditional cartooning style he showed off in his previous books, The Blot and Brilliantly Ham-Fisted, to a form that blends comics-style storytelling with a fine arts approach to imagery. The ultimate effect is equal parts touching and chilling.

Neely’s paintings and illustrations have been featured in galleries all over the U.S., in magazines and literary journals, and on records, posters and CDs for bands like The Melvins, ISIS and Wolves in the Throne Room, Groovie Ghoulies, among others. Earlier this year, he garnered a flurry of attention as one of the authors of the cult hit mini-comic Henry & Glenn Forever. Neely’s debut self-published novel, The Blot, won an Ignatz Award in 2007 and made it onto several of the industry’s “best of” lists that year, including “Best Comics of the Decade” in The Comics Journal.

Henry & Glenn on the BIG SCREEN!

The Henry & Glenn X-mas Cartoon Tom made back in December, will be playing at the Heavy Metal Film Festival today!

It will be playing before a new documentary Blood, Sweat and Vinyl: DIY in the 21st Century. Made over the course of 5 years by film-maker Kenneth Thomas, this film focuses on three important, independent record labels and the artists behind them: Hydra Head Records, Neurot Records and Constellation Records. I've seen parts of the film (I'm actually in it briefly) and it looks to be an interesting portrait of the underground music scene and how unconventional artists survive outside of the mainstream music industry.

Henry & Glenn Forever, a comic book by the Los Angeles art fraternity Igloo Tornado that finally answers the question, “what if Henry Rollins and Glenn Danzig were a little more than 'friends?’” has become a cult phenomenon in the comics and music scene since its release in April. Now, Igloo Tornado members Tom Neely, Gin Stevens, Scot Nobles and Levon Jihanian have put the question to more than a dozen other artists, who will offer their own answers in a group show opening Feb. 18 at La Luz de Jesus Gallery in Hollywood. Participants include critically acclaimed L.A.-based artist Eric Yahnker, low-brow superstars Coop and Clayton Brothers, and alternative cartoonists Ed Luce, Johnny Ryan and Kaz as part of a diverse group of artists, cartoonists and oddballs.

The Igloo Tornado will also debut their own new Henry & Glenn-themed works in the show and be on hand at the opening to sign copies of Henry & Glenn Forever. The Misfits cover band GLENN and cross-dressing Black Flag cover band BLACK FAG will perform live.

Henry & Glenn Forever has sold more than 30,000 copies since its release by the Microcosm imprint Cantankerous Titles less than a year ago. What started as a joke scrawled on a bar napkin has become a bona fide hit, spawning dozens of print and online write-ups from outlets including Spin, National Public Radio, MTV, LA Weekly, Decibel, Maximum Rock’n’roll and Razorcake. While the comic book has reportedly inspired outrage from singer Glenn Danzig and indifference from former Black Flag frontman Henry Rollins, the lighthearted send-up of two of punk's most macho icons has gained thousands of fans.
